The thousand-yard stare is the blank, unfocused gaze of people experiencing dissociation due to acute stress or traumatic events. I made this piece as a reflection of the increased issues and cases of people suffering from trauma and mental health issue (particularly in the U.S.) Initially this term was used to describe a condition among returning veterans of war. However there are conditions at work in some societies, even during peacetime that seem to be increasing the number of people experiencing this form of dissociative behavior. We are in the midst of a revolution in how we communicate, socialize and congregate that has resulted in increased levels of loneliness and despair. It appears to be moving forward more quickly than we as a species are equipped to adapt to. While my work often is a commentary in other instances (such as this) it is simply a representation of the times we live in.
