In September of 2020, during the pandemic, I was living in Oakland California. One morning I woke up thinking it was still very early because it was dark out. I opened my window and the sky was just this dark red color. It was almost 11am. 

Compounded by the fact that we were still in the early days of the pandemic, with no end in sight, it felt really apocalyptic. As if all of the mistakes we had made as a civilization were coming home to roost. 

The memory occasionally makes it's way back into my work. I didn't intend to make a piece about that event. The piece began as an experiment with some scrap paper I had laying around the studio. I started to collage them and placing the greens and yellows  on the right side of the piece next to the reds and ambers on the left side immediately brought back this memory of the encroaching fire and my reaction to it.
